New words in animated films
« on: April 07, 2016, 07:27:13 AM »
Hi. I am doing a short paper on English neologisms used in animated films/comics/cartoons, etc.

Under the term "neologism" I mean literally all new words, compounds, one-word metaphors...

Just to illustrate what I am looking for:

Homer Simpson(begging in the street): People I need your sharity (from share + charity)

I would highly appreciate any contribution and help.

Many thanks

There was a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill a few years ago who I talked with at a conference. She was working on newly coined blends in current usage, and I believe one of the sources was in cartoons and video games where there were new animals or other things to describe (like "What do you get if you cross a monkey and a giraffe?" etc.). The goal of the research was to look at the patterns in derivation and whether there was consistency across speakers in what blend they would create and then also what the rules are if so. That's about all I can remember but maybe you could track down that research.

Otherwise it sounds like you've got a lot of cartoons to watch. I mean research to do.
