Hi Linguists!

I was tasked by my Prof to post on a forum about this topic, "Linguistic Features of Electronic forum postings."

What are the Linguistic features that you know is prevalent to e-forum postings? I know this can be known through surfing the net, but I was tasked to have it here on the forum. Thank you for the help!

Do you have a specific question about this or some ideas to discuss with us? Was the goal to ask about this on a general forum, or specifically to linguists? It's a very difficult question to answer in a relevant, general way.

for example:
1. e-forums use adverbs to refer to an urgent need of response. "I 'soooo' need your response immediately." or, "Please 'actively' participate so we can get right answers faster."
2. misuse of punctuations, "(Urgent)!!!", "", "#", and etc.

There are for general forum, not isolated to only Linguist forum but I know all forums share the same prevalent Linguistic features on its postings.

But why are you asking us? Isn't this something you can research on your own? The language you are describing is common to all kinds of forums, social media, texting, and other informal writing.

E-forums' linguistic features are similar to the linguistic features we find in any social media site.

As per my own observation, there were also acronyms present in the forums here in this website. However, they occur less than in texting or chatting.

Could you consider smileys as an e-forum linguistic feature? As I can observe, this site do have smileys on its comment box in case one wants to add them on their comments. And I believe some sites do also have same feature as this.

"This is what I have done so far. Apparently all of those words have different meanings. So I don't know how it is related to polysemy and metaphorical extension. Please let me know " I saw this from the thread " Homonymy and Polysemy". While I am reading it, I have observed the smiley at the end part of DavidShan's reply. I'm just curious if smileys/emoticons are really part of the linguistic features? To think that it is informal. - Rhaia
