I thought I'd try to get some discussion going with some casual polls about who we are.

Cool, it will be interesting to see the results of a survey :)  For me, I started out wanting to research lingusitics as a career - now, I still want to be in research, but linguistics is becoming less and less a main part of that, and psychology and palaeolithic archaeology are taking a bigger and bigger place!

Yes, there are a lot of questions, and we don't have all of the answers. Let's try to find the answers and discuss them here together.

I am NOT studying linguistics any longer. I prefer to read novels, watch films, talk to friends, and go for nice walks along the ocean.

But I do like debating on ANY thing (I posted some of the reasons why the other day), from politics, to art, from anthropology to linguistics, from religion to pragmatics, and so on. This is why I like this forum. I feel I have unknown friends here who care about one of the topics I am able to talk about with some kind of vague knowledge.

That's a good point. My question was a bit narrow (I tried though!).
But maybe you'd agree you are still, in some sense, still learning about linguistics (and teaching, as well), here if not elsewhere. I think that's fair.
