Merry Christmas Linguist Forum!

Merry Christmas linguist forum!  To those who celebrate Christmas and those who don't - what is it like around Christmas time for you?

Our family aren't Christian, but we're still 'cultural' Christians and so celebrate Christmas - my husband and I decorated our living room at the beginning of December by putting up a wreath on the door, some garland, and a bunch of candles.  We also put up the Christmas cards we are sent so it looks nice and Christmasy in here :)  We just spent today decorating the 2 Christmas trees (they needed to get rid of some small ones they were also selling so two came home!) and watched cheesy comedy shows' Christmas specials.  I made my husband part of his gift this year, so finished that today and then wrapped all the presents for under the tree.  Last night we went to an uncle's house and spent time with the extended family. Tomorrow and the next day, my parents in law will be on the phone with their family.  I will make a skype call to my mom and my brother's family in Canada.  Then on Christmas morning we will open presents, and eat a big meal (at a rather early time for dinner) prepared by my mother in law, just my husband and his parents and I.  We ar bucking tradition and eating duck this year - none of us are turkey fans!

What are you up to this yuletide?  Do you have any family traditions?

Góð jól enn góðt nýtt ár!

I don't celebrate christmas, but I do celebrate yule. The yule tree, yule log, yule buck, yule lantern, yule sheaf, trolls, dwarves, elves, Amanita muscaria, pine trees, spruce trees, all sorts of funny things that no longer bear any pagan religious meaning, but live on as traditions, festivities, and feasts to celebrate the darkest part of the year, and the end of the old year and the beginning of the new.
