To not make a mistake with company name
« on: November 30, 2016, 04:07:54 AM »
Dear Linguists,

few years ago I have had blog about positive thinking and many translations of sentence "positive thinking is the key to success". Blog name contained polish word "nastawienie" (attitude) and after some time I got information from English speaking friend that for him it sounds like "nasta weenie" (sorry for bad words).
Currently I am creating a new company whose main purpose will be building online software and would like to avoid such connotations in ANY language, to not have situation like Mitsubishi had with Pajero in Spanish speaking countries.

So to the point... I would like my company and software to be called ALIVION

Could you please look at that word and tell me if it has any bad connotation is your mother tongue?

Thank you very much!

That looks like English "alive", so it's probably a good connotation for most speakers. I don't see any hidden meanings there.

I've also studied a number of other languages (to widely different degrees of ability!), and it isn't obviously anything bad in those either. But I might not know colloquial/slang words that are similar!

Just based on the structure of the word, it seems very English. It doesn't look like a word that would be found in German, for example. Something like that might be found in a Romance language (Spanish, French, etc. -- and it isn't too different from the Latin word alius 'other' but that isn't commonly used in the modern Romance languages I don't think). Part of the word might be similar to some other language, of course.

Hope that helps some.
