Hello, Need a little help
« on: July 06, 2017, 09:39:11 PM »
Hey guys, didn't know where to find someone who could help me so I'm trying this forum. A long time ago I found a dagger in my basement, couldn't find anyone who would claim from previous owners, they were Kurdish/yezidi. So i'm trying to figure out what the writing on the dagger says.

Hi Ellyah,

I don't speak Kurdish, but it's the same alphabet as Arabic, so I can type that out for you:
شرخان
In transliteration that would be roughly 'sharkhan'. (The 'kh' is like German Bach or Scottish loch, in non-technical terms something like a breathy K or a farther-back 'sh'.)
Note that I'm not sure about the first vowel because in the Arabic script short vowels are not written. There is a long A in the second syllable but the first vowel could be any one of them (shurkhan, shirkhan, etc.). (And I could also write it like sharkhaan to emphasize that the A is long in the second syllable.)

So maybe that will help you to look up the word somewhere or to ask someone who knows the language. Google Translate (for example) doesn't give any translation for the word (for Kurdish, Arabic, Persian or Urdu).

From a Google search, it seems like it might be a (common?) name. Maybe that's all it is?
