Unrelated to linguistics, but quite an interesting find nonetheless.
A study published today, which focused on the brain’s representation of the hand, found that our model of our bodies is out of sync with reality – with a strong tendency to think that the hands are shorter and fatter than their true shape.

Also something to think about: if you first hold out your hand, palm down, with your fingers spread; and then close your hand with only the index finger left pointing taut... in which configuration do the finger(s) appear thinner and/or longer?
Quite intersting the tricks our brain plays with us :)
