Title: Marking Phrases and Syllables in Praat
Post by: Lilja on May 25, 2014, 06:10:31 AM
Hello   :D

I hope I have posted this in the right place!

How does one mark phonological and intonational phrases, and syllables in Praat? I've tried looking online for pictures that show this but I can't find any, if anybody knows of any or any tutorials for this kind of thing I'd be really grateful! I know how to do quite a bit with Praat but I'm really not sure what these two things are supposed to look like  :(

Thanks!

What do you mean by "mark"? There are really only two annotation categories: intervals and boundaries. If you wanted to break everything up into phrases of some sort or another, you'd probably just create a separate tier and then mark the extent of each tier as an interval.

Thanks for replying! I know about all that, I was just wondering what to write in? For a syllable, should you use σ or write out the word in syllables i.e el - e - fant? I'm really stuck on phrases, I'm not sure how they should look  ???

Ah. Your question isn't really so much about Praat, then, but rather just annotations for syllable boundaries and prosodic units.

Generally speaking, syllables are marked with a period: [pɑl.ɪ.sɪ.læb.ɪk]
If you want to mark primary and secondary stress, you can do that with high and low tick marks: [ˌpɑl.ɪ.sɪˈlæb.ɪk]

Minor intonation breaks are generally marked with a single line | and phrase breaks with a double line ‖
