Title: entailment/presupposition
Post by: hankydude on October 27, 2015, 06:11:26 AM
Hey everyone!
I have been meaning to join here for a while; I recently began graduate school to become a teacher and am now required to take upper level linguistics courses. My schedule forced me to retake a lower level class and I am having some issue with entailment/presupposition.

Could you please give me an entailment and presupposition for the sentence and question below:

1. John continued smoking.

2. Why is it that many students enjoy studying semantics?

Thanks in advance for your help,
-Hank

Welcome to Linguist Forum.

We don't do homework for anyone here, but we can discuss your thoughts on a topic. So why don't you explain what you think is going on there, or ask a more specific question.

The idea is that you should explain what the speaker already knows or assumes about a context, when saying those sentences.
