How should I describe the different levels of embedding from smaller elements to big ones or all the way round?
-
Step 1: Identify the constituent structure for the whole sentence. (What is embedded in what?)
Step 2: Identify complement vs. adjunct (and possibly other relationships like 'specifier' if your theory requires that).
Step 3: Label all the phrases.
Understanding how phrases are embedded will automatically follow from those other steps.
