Title: Assimilation, Elision and Liaiason
Post by: briwil32 on March 30, 2015, 02:44:01 AM
Hi

I have a linguistics assignment due, and I need to give the phonemic script for each of these phrases and then say what is occurring... assimilation, elision or liaison. I need some help

- Tell him = elision of /t/
- The end = ?
- Good girl = assimilation
- Too often = liaison with /w/
- Past tense = elision of /t/

Are these correct?

Thank you in advance for any help

Hmm... elision is the omission of a sound between two words, assimilation is the merger of two sounds, and liaison is the pronunciation of an otherwise silent sound when the next word is vowel-initial.

Definitely re-check your answer to the first one (typo?). For the rest they look reasonable if you're supposed to be considering the word boundaries specifically. For the second, say it a few times and see what you hear-- it may be similar to another one on your list.
