Banner Contest
« on: January 02, 2014, 04:14:57 PM »
Now that we're in the new year, we thought it would be fun to have a banner contest to add some creativity and interaction to the forum.

Here's the current banner:

For reference, it's 280px wide by 100px tall.

SUBMISSIONS:
Everyone can submit a banner for Linguist Forum!

Rule 1: Dimensions and format
Height: between 80px and 150px
Width: up to 600px
Suggested: 500px by 150px
The format can be PNG, GIF or JPEG. I'd suggest PNG for lossless quality and better transparency for faded edges if you want that.

Rule 2: Content
Image: anything linguist forum themed -- languages, linguistics, culture, whatever makes sense to you: be creative!
Text: must include the website's name because this is the logo/title for the forum. Acceptable variants:
Linguist Forum
LinguistForum.com

or, if you're feeling especially creative: LF

To submit: just post a reply here with the image-- if you have any trouble uploading the image then feel free to ask for help.

Rule 3: number of submissions
You may submit as many banners as you'd like, but only up to 2 from any one member will be considered for each vote (the others can be included later). This will keep it fair so everyone has a chance.

CONTEST/VOTING:
After the submissions are in, we'll have a vote to pick which one will be the new banner.
That banner will stay up until the next vote. If your banner is not selected, it can be resubmitted for the next vote.
We'll try to rotate the banners often to keep the forum fun and new.

For now, we'll plan this as a January event:
Please submit in the next 2 weeks.
Then we'll have a vote and the banner will go up for a while-- we'll have another round of submissions and another vote based on interest, probably in February.

Hooray!!  This will be fun!  I just wish I still had photoshop on my computer, Gimp2 is really frustrating :(

I just made a simple fun one:

Cute.

I know what you mean about Gimp, but it's free. A bit buggy, but it gets the job done.

And for those of you who would like to do this but don't have Photoshop, that's a great way :)

Here's a resized version of the existing banner, not necessarily for this round but an option for the future.

I can also change the background to a bluer tone if that's preferred, but this does have the "old map" look.

Also: I increased the upload file size limits so that a 150x500px png file can be attached here.
