Working with Type1 .pfa Font Program Typography

I'd like to be able to work with fonts from their coding language grassroots. Is anyone familiar with font generating and postscript in C++ or Python? My understanding is that it mainly started in C++. I've got these open source Adobe endorsed and 2nd opinion font program builds:
https://github.com/adobe-type-tools/afdko/blob/develop/tests/type1_test.py
or
https://github.com/kohler/t1utils/blob/master/t1asm.c
. Does anyone know how to get these to work or to apply a similar programming method for engaging with .pfa file types?
